Police searching for man accused of shooting at detectives in Penn Hills

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Allegheny County Police are searching for a man they say opened fire at Pittsburgh detectives Thursday morning in Penn Hills.

County police said two plainclothes detectives were investigating the suspect, 40-year-old Darrell Barham of Wilkinsburg, on Newfield Drive about 5:30 a.m.

When Barham spotted the detectives, who had a warrant to monitor Barham’s vehicle, the detectives drove away in an unmarked car, but Barham followed them closely, police said. As they traveled on Hulton Road near Iowa Street, the detectives heard gunshots and saw muzzle flashes coming from Barham’s vehicle.

Barham, described as 5-foot-11 and about 210 pounds, faces four counts of aggravated assault, firearms violations and other charges. Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities did not provide a description of Barham’s vehicle, nor did they indicate why police had obtained a warrant to monitor it.
