Steelers list Jaylen Warren, Troy Fautanu, Roman Wilson as limited on first injury report

The time has finally come when Mike Tomlin is mandated to offer injury clarity on Steelers players — and the first game week of the season began with four potential contributors in question.

No. 2 running back Jaylen Warren (hamstring), first-round right tackle Troy Fautanu (knee), third-round receiver Roman Wilson (ankle) and backup cornerback Cory Trice (groin) all were listed as limited participants in practice Wednesday. Warren has been steadfast about his availability for Week 1 in Atlanta. Still, it would’ve been more reassuring to see him log a full workload — particularly on one of the most popular nights of the year for fantasy football drafts.

Of course, Warren still has a couple of days to be more involved in game preparation for the Falcons. As a third-year veteran, he likely needs less practice time than rookies such as Fautanu and Wilson. But the Steelers have a better third option at running back this season behind Najee Harris in Cordarrelle Patterson — who spent the past three years with the Falcons and looked spry scampering for a 32-yard touchdown in the preseason finale — should they choose to ease Warren back into action.

The Steelers also moved one step closer to Dan Moore kicking off a fourth consecutive season as the starting left tackle. Fautanu hasn’t practiced in full since his knee injury in the first preseason game, while Wilson has been out since the first padded practice of training camp way back in late July. Trice’s groin issue cropped up in the final preseason game in Detroit, and he, too, is closer to the rookie category, having missed all of last season with a torn ACL.

After Friday's practice, the Steelers will offer a game status of questionable, doubtful, out or no designation. If a player is dealing with an injury (such as starting right tackle Broderick Jones) but it doesn’t limit their reps in practice, then they do not need to be listed on the report.

Only starting left guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) and sixth-round defensive lineman Logan Lee (calf) did not practice among the Steelers on the active roster. Seumalo will be replaced by Spencer Anderson in the lineup for this week at least, while Lee is trending toward being inactive in a deep defensive line rotation.

Most notable for the Falcons is that starting tight end Kyle Pitts (hamstring) was limited to begin the week. But Pitts told Atlanta media he’s in no danger of missing the season opener and only was sidelined for a play or two Wednesday.
