Yinzer neighborhoods
Perhaps they should change the name of DOMI (Department of Mobility and Infrastructure) to DUMMY instead (Department of Unusual Measures Messing-up Yinzer neighborhoods).
The latest DOMI proposal to restrict Penn Avenue in the Strip District is yet another bad idea that negatively affects Pittsburghers, hurts businesses and ruins neighborhoods (“Many Strip District businesses remain strongly opposed to Penn Avenue overhaul,” June 19).
For years, DOMI decisions made in the interest of safety or accommodation, such as elimination of car lanes, changing streets to one way, complete road closures in favor of bikes, installing hundreds of “no turn on red” signs, seem to have failed to consider offsetting negative effects on commuters, parking, or business.
One also wonders whether these decisions could be justified from a cost-benefit perspective. Let’s hope that Mayor Corey O’Connor will focus critical expenditures on Pittsburgh’s most urgent priorities.
