A popular South Side bar and restaurant has been hit with a consumer alert by the Allegheny County Health Department after a recent inspection uncovered multiple health code violations.
Capo’s, formerly known as Carson City Saloon, located on East Carson Street, received 10 low-risk violations, three medium-risk violations, one high-risk violation and one administrative violation, according to the inspection report.
The high-risk violation included “severe accumulation” of old food debris on food-contact surfaces, such as the steam table, can opener and work tables, and several food containers in the prep cooler with visible mold growth, the inspection report said.
Medium-risk violations noted grease accumulation found on all of the kitchen equipment utensils and fixtures; accumulation of lime and calcium in the dish machine; mold seen in both ice machines; the water heater venting inside, a carbon monoxide hazard; and the person in charge failing to prevent medium and high-risk violations.
Low-risk violations cited a broken upright cooler in the kitchen; dirty wiping cloths seen on the counters; soda syrups being stored in the employee bathrooms; rust inside the bar coolers; both fixtures in the basement bathrooms being dirty; grease accumulation on the kitchen floors; broken floor tiles in the dish room; and old residue found on the dish room walls, among others, according to the inspection report.
The one administrative violation found that the restaurant failed to notify the Health Department of its name change to Capo’s from Carson City Saloon.
Corrective actions in the report suggest cleaning and sanitizing food contact surfaces using approved methods; replacing equipment; cleaning and maintaining non-food-contact surfaces; providing adequate ventilation; and removing miscellaneous items, among others.
Health Department officials had no further comment. Representatives of Capo’s could not be immediately reached.
A re-inspection of the bar is currently pending, according to the inspection report.
